Just looking for some input, have done several day hikes in and around TN, my son has gotten the bug and thinks we should hike the AT approx. 80 miles from Springer MT to Bly Gap last week in December. I envision cold, rain, ice, hunters etc. etc. Am I foolish for biting this off? Spring time sounds a lot better to me. Any input regarding trail conditions, preparations, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch, Wild Willy

Honestly, I think it will be tough at the time of the year ... you'll be rolling the dice. It could be great weather but there's also the chance of all those things you mention, plus short days. I guess you could wait to check the weather forecast until a day or two before leaving. Are you trying to squeeze a hike into the school break? |
