There are a lot of ideas out there why not pop em into the forums and talk about it with everyone?
I think i'm going to go with a higher ankle for the support.
I've got a plate and 5 screws in the ankle and very little internal support. so i'll take the external.
No favorite brand yet.
No magical lacing tricks yet either

I have done heaps of hiking in high tops and have found them a bit restricting.
Lately I have changed to "Keen" with virtually no ankle support and have found them to be so good. Bought one pair and used them on a 2 week hike in the NT (oz) and have decided that they were the best boots ever. So bought 3 more pairs when they were out at half price due to the closure of an outback camping store. Whoopee what a find.
Lacing tips lace tight from the bottom loose across the highpoint near the middle and then firm not tight around the ankle. Around about half way through your days hiking loosen them a wee bit this will be a great benefit as your feet would have swelled slighty and will be much more comfy for the second half of the day. I do this without fail. Never have blisters never have feet problems. I also wear 2 pairs of socks one thin and one thick.
Cheers
