I have read at several sources that your loaded pack weight should be 35lbs or less. My question is: with food and water or without?

With pack weight, less is better. When wife & I started our hike of the AT in 06 our packs weighed around 34 lbs. each. We each had 3-4 days of food and 2 litres of water. In going back in 07 to complete our hike we were able to shed around 5 lbs. each. What a difference that made.
